My Professional Identity and Values

The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) provides a framework that outlines the expectations for nurses practicing within the province of Ontario. This framework includes seven professional standards; accountability, continuing competence, ethics, knowledge, knowledge application, leadership and relationships (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2002). These professional standards were incorporated into my practice both in the classroom and during my clinical placements as I began to develop my professional identity.

When I officially began my nursing career, my first position was on a Medicine/Oncology Unit at a hospital and all at once I was required to take on a multitude of responsibilities. While performing these duties not only was I obligated to adhere to hospital policy and best practice guidelines but also learn where my personal beliefs and values fit within my professional identity as a nurse on this unit. Very quickly I had to grow out of the anxious student and into a healthcare provider patients and their families could rely on. During my time on the unit, I became a critical thinker that was organized, culturally competent, empathetic, understanding and passionate about the safety and well being of the populations I served. Settling into my role as a registered nurse I came to value and prioritize autonomy, transparency, confidentiality, compassion and justice.

I have now transitioned into my role as a registered nurse at a Community Health Centre located in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It is here that I have had the opportunity to explore and initiate programs related to health promotion, disease prevention and infection control in underserved communities. I have gained a more intimate perspective and deeper understanding of the communities I serve as I provide public outreach and education tailored to their needs. By engaging with a variety of patients in such a diverse landscape I have developed a passion for community health and hope to continue to grow within this particular field of nursing.

My Professional Identity and Social Media

I believe the way I choose to interact and present myself on social media should directly reflect my professional values as a registered nurse. After performing the social media audit and hearing feedback from other classmates, I realize I must work towards becoming more open to positively engaging in health discussions online to help others avoid misinformation and encourage health literacy, autonomy and promotion. Whether I am at home or at work, I still function as a registered nurse within the healthcare system and therefore should work to ensure that I am creating an environment both on and offline that is conducive to the health and safety of the populations I serve.

As a registered nurse working in Ontario, I am licensed under the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). I also belong to a few provincial bodies and organizations. I have listed them below and provided a brief explanation for each one.

My Organizations

Ontario Health is an agency created by the government of Ontario to coordinate the province's health care system.

The CNO is the governing body for Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NP) in Ontario, Canada.

The RNAO advocates for public policy, promotes a sense of belonging within nursing and provides legal protection for licensed and practicing nurses.
